Get Closer to the Music
Story and photography by Stacy Traficante Gutshall

When Ed Murvine and Cathy Berg set out to keep music alive they went full speed ahead and 4 years later the 4th Annual Music Festival set the pace for another musical year.

Ed and Cathy are committed to making “Get Closer to the Music” one of the biggest organizations of its kind as they help the youth of our community learn, experience, and explore music.  “Music is one way for young people to connect with themselves, but it is also a bridge for connecting with others”.

Time and time again research finds that music curbs substance abuse and assists learning when music is used in conjunction with studies.  It is further found that music can actively contribute to brain development and aids in students receiving more academic honors and awards compared to students who are not involved with music.

While undertaking the huge process of creating a program that will enable the organization to provide instruments to children of low income families, they ask that if you or anyone you know has an instrument that is not being used, unwanted or even damaged and would like to donate it, or a monetary donation, to please call 814-935-1634 or 814-207-2934.

Saturday’s events were held at the East Juniata Civic Center and we’d like to thank them for providing the space to hold the Annual Music Festival.  Kids of all ages along with their parents came to listen to the music and get some free hands-on lessons from the experts. You can check out some of the action at the Music Festivals by logging on to www.getclosertothemusic.com.

We’d also like to thank some local bands for volunteering their time and music: Spirit Lost; Generation Gap; Hair Force One; Felix and The Hurricanes; and Ricky Lee.  Additional thanks to all our sponsors and volunteers for their kind support in making the music festival a success.

Help our youth by keeping them off the streets and away from drugs and alcohol and get more involved in music.  Help us give them the confidence they need to succeed in life.

From the youngest to the oldest, it's never too late to "Get Closer to the Music".
