TRASH THE DRESS
Story and photography by Stacy Traficante Gutshall
Ok, so your wedding day was perfect, the love of your life is now
your husband, and you will live happily ever after……but what about
the dress?
You have it cleaned, pressed, bagged and now it hangs in
the back of your closet. Such a sad, uneventful ending to such a
beautiful dress; you put so much time and effort into choosing that
special dress for one of the most memorable days in your lifetime.
Well, you do have the
wedding pictures to admire – you know the one where you’re standing
at the alter with your long, gorgeous dress train so neatly draped
down the alter steps; and the one where you and your groom come out
to meet your guests for the first time as husband and wife along
with bird seed, rice or a variety of items being tossed upon you; oh
yes, and the one where you and the love of your life are caught in a
special kiss after your family and friends continue to tap their
water glasses in the manner in which we’ve been raised; and how can
we forget the cake cutting photo – we all know the deal, we ALL have
the pictures. And the dress…..well, the dress was beautiful – you
were a princess for a day!
Dress etiquette is quickly making a fashion statement
for brides everywhere and they’re calling it “Trash the Dress”. The
concept is becoming more popular and certainly gives us women
another day to be the princesses we were meant to be. Of course,
mom may not be keen on the idea and Aunt Agnes might roll over in
her grave, but life is short and sometimes you just have to do
something out of the ordinary to create fun memories that will last
forever.
There are many levels of trashing. One doesn’t have to
actually ruin the dress, but hey, it’s your dress. You don’t have
to worry about a little dirt and water; it's not like you need to
go to a reception or anything. Afterwards, you will be able to
clean, press and bag the dress just like before – but have fun with
it and make another special memory.
Some
brides go for the gusto – even without the groom! For instance, you
may want to do candid shots in a water fountain, posed on an old
broken-down car in a field, perched up on a billboard, swimming in a
pool, riding a horse, frolicking in the woods, playing in the snow
and even slugging in the mud – it’s all good! It’s your dress – do
whatever you want with it.
When the pictures of your wedding day are finally boxed
and put away along side your dress, the portrait that will remain on
wall will be the “Trash the Dress” portrait. It will never loose
its appeal and will certainly get a reaction from anyone who sees
it. The fun, light-hearted story will be told down through
generations to come.
Now, you may wish you had heard of this concept many
moons ago when you long-time married couples were hitched. Well,
get that dress out of the bag and put it back on, zipped or not, and
have a fun day with it. A dress trashing photo would make a
wonderful anniversary gift to the man that is still your prince and
he would get to see his bride once again.
Put a new twist on an old tradition. Be a princess for
one more day...a “bad” princess!
